A Lifestyle of Destiny

Not wavering at the promise.

God said to Abram, “I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Gen. 12:1-4)

God is at work here.

It is God who is doing the blessing here and I would like to propose that; its only in response to God’s blessing that Abram can be a blessing to others.

 God calls and Abram responds.

God doesn’t tell Abram, “be blessed, sit back in your tent and drink your coffee”. Instead He calls him to “be a blessing”. Pack the bags, forget the pension, follow Me to a land I have prepared.

It’s easy to sit back and thank God for our blessings, especially when they are material things. We can thank God for the blessing of our warm houses and good family (as we should). We can thank God for the blessing of close friends, a strong church, and nice town (as we do).

But the call of God doesn’t stop there.

Abram was blessed, because of God’s hand and would become a blessing, because of God’s promise. Abram would need to embrace the journey, the new lifestyle. The ultimate challenge is to lay aside all that we call familiar, in order to step into a lifestyle… a lifestyle of destiny. “I will make you a great nation and I will make your name great”.

To measure the significance of a destiny can only come from God, the One who spoke it forth. So as God steps into Abram’s life with real words of promise; He was going to also give powerful evidence. Beginning with a son and measuring until today; the stars in the sky and the sand along the seashore, would serve quite nicely for Abram’s lifestyle of destiny.  Wow, what an enormous measuring tool to evaluate a destiny.

Yet its the lifestyle, that reveals the destiny!

Abram lived the lifestyle being convinced of the promise. We read, “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God” (Rom 4:20). So there it is, the response of a man who has chosen to live God’s lifestyle. Giving glory to God… he sees the destiny emerge. To enlarge our destiny; God will enlarge us, enlarge our vision and enlarge our lifestyle.
