Send the Rain

“Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain! Like the latter and former rain to the earth.” (Hosea 6:3)

“He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, like showers that water the earth.” (Psalm 72:6)

It is the cry of my heart… “Holy Spirit – send us the rain!” We are after Your refreshing! Your going forth is established as the morning… and we have awakened to the sound of Your Presence! Yes, Lord come to us as the rain! We are longing to see, waiting to know, postured to receive the abundance of Your resource. Like the sweet spring rains that fall on the meadow. Like the swift delouse that washes the atmosphere. We long for the great outpourings and the gentle drizzles alike. Its all about Your Glory, that we might experience Your heart.

A Life Source:

Rain has such a powerful influence on that which it touches. We can visually see its dual implication. First as refreshing – where there has been dryness and barrenness (Joel 2:23-29). Second, as restoration – where there has been loss (Isa. 28:11-12). Rain comes to replenish and renew everything it touches. Its longed for and anticipated, because its a life source that carries the earth into new seasons. Did you catch that… Rain initiates new seasons of life in the earth!

New Seasons of Fruitfulness:

The ”outpouring” Peter and the 120 disciples experienced at Pentecost (Acts 2:17) was not some abstract concept; it was the birth of a New Day! This was the literal evidence of “latter rain” that brought about a harvest and watered the earth for fruitful seasons. The Lord is saying to the thirsty that He will send rain! He will come like the rain to fields… to people that are totally barren as a promise of revival.

Personal Revival:

Needing to be refreshed doesn’t mean that we are lost or backslidden or that we have broken our fellowship in some way. When the lawn endures a hot season, it dries up and needs to be refreshed – only rain can truly nurture its recovery. In the day of natural drought, the earth cries out silently to be restored. When there is drought and barrenness of soul or when the evidence of weariness takes hold, it is with great anticipation that we cry out for the early and latter rains of heaven. There is no greater sight to the weary ones than the gift of refreshing… the rain of heaven!

Its the Resource of God in the Promised Land:

“For the land which you go to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot, as a vegetable garden; but the land which you cross over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year. And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled.” (Deut. 11:10-15)

“Holy Spirit – Send the rain!”

Discerning Seasons

“Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.” (Mt. 2:12)

Things in life can shift so quickly that we must stay tuned into Christ and listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit at all times. God works in seasons and when a new season is before us we often need a new mindset to respond accurately to the new information and the unfamiliar environment. Most of our greatest victories are seen emerging out of seasons where we were quick to respond to life… trusting God and obeying His voice!

Remind yourself: God is always in the new season before you!

A powerful example of this is when the Magi followed a star to find the infant King Jesus. King Herod feels the challenge of a new king in his kingdom and eventually calls for the death of all the infants in the region. This enormous reaction would create a disturbance in the natural realm and yet Heaven itself was unmoved, because God was already at work in the new season. God warns the Magi; in a dream, to return to their own country by a different path. God also releases an angel to speak with Joseph in a dream about gathering his little family and going to Egypt for a while.

We must recognize the significance of the Spirit’s voice in seasons like this, because it can become an issue of life and death.

Just yesterday I mentioned a shift in the Heavenly realms to a fellow believer, explaining this very issue with him about his mindset in seasonal changes. In my conversation I warned him to “be very careful”, because reactions are based so much on our heart, our discipline and our sensitivity. Sometimes, bad decisions are made in haste that can effect the rest of our lives. This can happen simply because we find ourselves unable to see the bigger picture and discern seasonal shifts.

About 2 hours later; while he was pondering our words and driving home, he came into a near death experience. An oncoming car tried to pass four other vehicles and forced him into the ditch. As he sat along the side of the road what became real to him was how quickly circumstances change and how responsive a “spiritual person” needs to be. God had given him the opportunity to experience an unwelcome moment… and it was his reaction time that saved his life. It was there that he recognized the value of discernment… most discernment comes out of our discipline. His discipline as a driver became the teaching tool for his spiritual ability to hear and set his mind to understand the serious nature of a seasonal shift.

God often gives us warnings in the midst of seasonal shifts. Grace is released to God’s Servants… so we can make adjustments in our thinking, our behavior and our responses. We need to look for God whenever we come upon surprises… a seasonal shift might be around the corner.

Humbled & Hungry

“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” (Deut. 8:3)

Wow, here is an interesting reality. Imagine, you are an Israelite, recently freed after a lifetime of slavery! You just experienced the frightening miracle of the Red Sea… and you come out safe and dry on the other side! You turned to watch as the same walls of water which gave you protection, close to offer you security – by an amazing drowning death on your enemies! You joyously celebrate and dance at God’s victory and deliverance! You feel invincible, knowing God is on your side! Never again will you doubt the One who proved Himself so mighty and faithful!

But now the scene is different, it is a few days later and you are tired, thirsty and hot. You are not at the threshold of the “promised land” yet. Instead you are wandering aimlessly in a desert filled with serpents and scorpions. Now you are feeling tested! Will you trust and believe in the God you have followed?

The Faith Dimension:

Do you believe God mightily delivered you from the power of the enemy to leave you wandering through the desert of confusion and silence? Was this His purpose? Just as the Lord led the children of Israel out of Egypt into the wilderness… so He leads you! The devil did not lead you… God did! It was the devil’s goal to enslave you! We must be people of faith, realizing there is a purpose in the midst of dry times!

Hunger does something to the human soul!

  • (1st) God humbles us.
  • (2nd) He causes us to hunger.
  • (3rd) Then He feeds us with manna – “Angel Food”.

Choose to Pass the Test:

Praise is what Angels do best… it is a release from their well fed experience – in Heaven’s Glorious atmosphere! Indeed the “Holy, Holy, Holies” are a response to what is seen and heard in the Presence of God! Praise will awaken your faith, its the heart’s spiritual quest; to hunger feed on the riches of God’s Promises! This is our spiritual reality as believers…  to praise the Lord in the midst of the wilderness, the worship and sing in the midnight hour and to come to the heavenly table in the season of hunger. We are in training, baby! All along He is teaching us, bringing us to a place where we discover the true nature of our hearts, the true passion of His heart and… the true riches of His Glory.

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19)

Jesus said to His disciples, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” (Jn. 4:32)

Humbled & Hungry… Because “…man does not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes from the Mouth of the Lord.”

God’s Point of View: “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (Exod. 19:4-6)

But now the scene changes, its a few days later and you are tired, thirsty and hot… and terribly hungry. You are not at the threshold of the “promised land” yet. Instead you are wandering aimlessly in a desert filled with serpents and scorpions. Now you are feeling tested! Will you trust and believe in the God you have followed… the God who will test you by your hunger?

Living God’s Plan

“For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” (Heb. 3:16-19)

For 400 years, God planned the exodus! His desire was to have a people… to free the Hebrews from Egypt and make them His own. To convince Pharaoh to let them go, God sent His friend Moses and 10 plagues into Egypt. He opened the Red Sea and fed His people with manna and quail. He carried them on eagle’s wings and took care of all of their needs. And He brought them to the edge of the Promised Land. They were a special, chosen and protected nation. Their health was good and their shoes didn’t even wear out! But because of unbelief there were thousands of them who did not go into the Promised Land.

When God’s People Say – NO!

At the point of decision, when the people say, ‘We can’t do it! or We won’t do it!’… God is true to His Word! The Bible says “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6). Where there is unbelief, there is no access to Promised Land. We loose the privilege of walking in the Promises of God, when we walk in stubborn disobedience to God’s heart. And we miss what God has planned for our lives in the process.

Choosing to Obey:

The writer of Hebrews is saying, “I do not want what happened in the wilderness to happen to you”. Don’t miss what God has planned for your life simply because you were afraid or unwilling to take a step of faith. The point is, that our unbelief limits God! We must choose to obey God in faith! Yes – it is a choice and we must not buy into excuses or argue with God. Every time we trust God’s wisdom, even when we don’t “feel” like it, we deepen our relationship with Christ, gain strength and open the door into the plans of God. It is God’s idea that we walk in bold obedience to His purposes and He has given us everything we need to do it. We just have to do it!

  • Listen to these words: “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Pet. 1:3-4)

Trust His Power:

Understand… that as we obey God, not out of duty, fear or compulsion, but because we love Him; power is released to do the impossible! God empowers what He requires of His Child! Trust is the key… trusting that He knows what is best for us, activates the same supernatural resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead (Rom. 8:6-11). The Holy Spirit quickens our mortal bodies so that we are able to please God, reach goals and walk in promise… no matter how big the obstacles resisting us. As we “follow” Christ – and I mean radical following – our relationship with Him deepens and grows stronger (Eph. 2:4-10).

The Love Factor:

Unbelievers often think Christians obey out of obligation or guilt or fear of punishment, but the opposite is true. Believers have been forgiven and set free… we obey out of love, and our obedience is not difficult when love is factored in! Jesus loves us with the same passion that the Father loves Him, and we abide in that love! Jesus said, I have loved you even – or with the same passion – as the Father has loved Me. Remain (abide) in My love. When you obey Me, you remain in My love, just as I obey My Father and remain in His love. I have told you this so that you will be filled with My joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” (Jn. 15:9–11)

The greatest tragedy would be for you and I to stand at the edge of our destiny, but be afraid to enter into all that God has planned for us. Our obedience in moving forward, to take risks and step out in faith; will release God’s power in our lives. We were designed, created and anointed to live God’s plan for our lives – through bold faith, trusting His power and overflowing in joy. Let love be your motivation and run into the Father’s arms!

The time is NOW… to break out into God’s plan for your life!
