Found Praying

The Holy Spirit came to a godly man living in Damascus named Ananias. The instruction to Ananias was to go to Judas’ house on Straight Street, lay hands on Saul and restore his sight. Of course, Ananias knew of Saul’s reputation and realized this was going to be dangerous. Yet, here is how the Holy Spirit speaks of Saul of Tarsus to Ananias: “behold, he is praying” (Acts 9:11). The Lord was saying, in essence, “Ananias, you will find this man on his knees. He knows you are coming and he will be found praying. He even knows your name, and why you’re being sent to him. He wants his eyes opened.”

Saul was Desperate:

When did Saul receive this inner knowing? How did he receive this vision, this pure Word from God? It came through fervent prayer and supplication. In fact, I believe the Holy Spirit’s words to Ananias reveal what moved God’s heart about Saul. Saul had been shut in with God for three days, refusing all food and water. All he wanted was the Lord. So he continued on his knees all that time, praying and seeking God.

Prayer Changes Everything:

Yes, prayer does indeed change us, and that is surely one of God’s purposes for it. But the Bible says that prayer can actually change things that seem impossible. Like a man named Saul of Tarsus becoming a mighty Apostle to the Gentiles.

Have you ever asked or wondered why pray? Why does God choose to work this way? Why not just do everything Himself? Why include us? I believe the answer is very simple, “co-laboring”. When God’s people can be involved in His work and experience a flow of grace through prayer, they will be drawn closer to Him. Perfect example of this, is Ananias. God didn’t need Ananias to go to Saul and pray for him. He could have done it without Ananias… but He didn’t. And the amazing testimony is still effecting the world as Christians read the New Testament letters of Paul.

Maintain Your Prayer Life!

Next time you pray, say to yourself: “This prayer could change history!” As intercessors, God has ordained that we pray (1 Tim. 2:1). He intends to change things through my prayer, and He has ordained my voice to impact the world for His purpose… to bring about Kingdom results.

“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (Jms. 5:16)… it changes the impossible!

Victory Over Porn

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” (Matthew 5:27–30)

If you really want victory; it requires intervention, and you need to desire freedom more than your sin. I never had victory while making “God my accountability partner”. I never had victory in 14 years, and tried everything. I tried every spiritual discipline in the book. Nothing worked. I kept falling. These steps are what you need to have victory.

1. TURN, REPENT & STOP hiding your sin. Tell someone you trust. You can’t fight this alone. Pornography is a drug with an addictive power stronger than heroin. You can’t just get victory. You have to get clean! It warps your thinking so that you can’t go for more than a few days or weeks without getting a fix.

2. RENOUNCE all behavior that is associated with the covenant you have made. Its a covenant with your eyes, heart and mind… you are bound in the flesh to a spirit that is meeting your needs for love and affection. You won’t be able to get victory if you have any opportunity to feed your sinful appetite. Yes it will make life difficult, but its better to get clean and break the covenant you have made with lust, than never having victory. One huge lie that we tend to believe is that we can control our behavior… someday you will get burned and your sin will destroy you or someone you love.

3. GET RID of anything that connects you to pornographic images. Your computer, books, movies or voyeuristic tendencies must all be dismantled. If you need to use the Internet, go to the library or use a filtered system at a Christian college or at work. Change your phone plan to a non-data providing plan.

4. YOU MUST HAVE A PERSONAL accountability partner. If you have to use the Internet on a phone or computer, you NEED to install Safe-Eyes or Covenant Eyes and set someone up to receive emails of your Internet activity, and have daily or weekly discussions with them. Make them the Administrator and make sure you don’t have to password to change the settings. Yes, you can view God as your accountability partner. But 14 years of praying and “fixing” it and asking God for help didn’t fix my struggle. I had to have accountability… the bondage was too deeply rooted. There was a person in my life (now my wife) that understood my struggle and loved me enough to keep me around and keep me accountable. Only then could I get victory.

5. HAVE A PLAN for spiritual renewal. You must renew your mind daily in the Word of God. Change will only take hold as you live in a fresh revelation of “Who’s” you are and who God wants you to become. Invest time in reading the Bible and fervent prayer. Shut all the gates… ears, eyes and heart desires. Ask God every hour to cleanse your mind and restore a “right” spirit in your heart. Listen to spiritual music… hymns or praise and worship music. Sing to God. Read the Psalms… especially Psalm 51, 103 and 139! Ask God to revive you; and serve Him like a radical crazy person. You must get on fire for God to avoid being burned up with lust.

If you’re struggling with porn, you can’t win this fight on your own.

The enemy is you… your heart is captured by the covenant you have made with lust. As your desires are held in a dysfunctional system of sinful behavior you find the problem is too secret and too large. You are confronted with lustful images everywhere you go. Get help now, before you become completely bound. “Come out” of darkness and do not worry about what people think of you. Even if you’re perceived as a spiritual person right now; it doesn’t matter… you must have help. What matters is that you get help! Get help before you hurt someone else, you destroy your marriage or even worse… commit a crime. Thankfully the Lord has intervened in my life and I have been delivered. But I could fall again any day. I continue to need accountability in my life. Be honest with yourself. You must want the victory so bad you’ll do anything to get it… and GET HELP!

I had to realize that I was fighting a losing battle!
