Prophetic Preaching

Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the One who sent Me.” (John 7:16)

Jesus consistently preached under the anointing of God, as we see in the above verse. Yet the key to being prophetic is that Jesus’ message carried the weight of supernatural creativity, breakthrough and fulfillment.  A prophetic preacher may use the gifts of teaching, exhortation and prophecy in a variety of ways; but the power of the message itself, will shift the atmosphere (Rom. 1:16-17). That is what makes it prophetic!

“And take the … sword of the Spirit, which is the word [rhema] of God” (Eph 6:17)

Prophetic Preaching contains a ‘Now’ Word:

The prophetic gift is employed to make known the thoughts, purpose and intent of God. Prophetic preaching has a sense of immediacy. In the New Testament, the Greek word ‘rhema’ primarily refers to the spoken word that carries power in its ‘utterance’, whereas ‘logos’ primarily refers to the written word, the logic of God or His thought process. Prophetic teaching and preaching releases the rhema of God’s “Spirit-breathed”, current Word. It is designed to reveal the Father’s “Now Word”, making known something that if believed would come forth. It answers the question, ‘What is God’s Word to us in this season?’

Example: The Apostle Paul said, “the word is near you even in your mouth and in your heart, that is the word of faith that we preach” (Rom. 10:8). He goes on to say that if you act on it by confessing and believing, you will be saved… You will be transformed!

What happens in prophetic preaching is that we are drawn into an experience by the conviction of the Holy Spirit as well as the will to believe and step into its power. It sets a Kairos moment… the opportune time for change and transformation. Prophetic preaching opens doorways into heavenly blessing, revelation and assignments.

“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.” (1 Cor 2:13)

Based on Spiritual Revelation:

Prophetic preaching is inspired by the Holy Spirit through the means of revelation. The word ‘revelation’ in the New Testament Greek, apokalupsis, means an ‘uncovering’ or ‘disclosure’. In other words, God is revealing something by His Spirit that is not known by natural means… its a mystery. There is often a call to action or a need to respond and activate the Word received by the hearer. This is why we place a high priority on seasons of prayer or altar times, to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts when the atmosphere has been shifted in a room or auditorium. This may be to align one’s heart or actions, to pay attention to a timely warning or submit to guidance. When we do not position ourselves for God’s present or future plans, we often miss our opportunity. The consistent results of the prophetic instructions of God are for transformation and breakthrough.

Notice these two examples:

  1. “The children of Issachar, who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel should do… and all their brethren were at their command” (1 Chron. 12:32)
  2. “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” (Mt. 7:28-29)

Prophetic Preaching Carries Authority:

This authority is not based upon the preacher’s gift, but on the basis of being entrusted with a message from God Himself. Throughout Scripture, the instruction given through a prophet brought breakthrough for God’s people. This included strategic guidance in a time of warfare (2 Chron. 20:14-17), a word of action in crisis (Gen 41:25-46) or a specific declaration of breakthrough (2 Kings 7:1-2). Prophetic preaching is of great value when a shift is needed to bring the Kingdom of God and push back against the darkness that floods our vision.

Empowering the Church:

“Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers.”  (Acts 15:32)

The outcome of prophetic preaching, just as with all prophetic ministry, is that the Church and its leadership is built up, strengthened and empowered. (1 Cor 14:3-4)

Rending Heaven

“Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your Presence. To make Your Name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your Presence.” (Isa. 64:1-2)

Like many of you, I have felt the despair of this season. We are in a very narrow place and even as the nations rage, there is a sense within my heart that all is not well. Everything that can be shaken is being shaken. If we are not careful, each of us might be tempted to believe that we are alone in this season. The Tempter would love for us to believe that God is not with us, that He doesn’t care about our challenges and that no one, not even our closest friends, are concerned about us. Yet, we must not allow the devil to cause us to surrender one step or one inch of our Kingdom posture. We must stand on His Word and tell the devil, “It is written!”

Releasing His Word:

When God says He will rend the heavens, He means that He will tear open a portion of heaven for His entry. He intends to come down by releasing His Word to us. The word “rend” is connected to the same word in Greek which means to “call out”. God is calling out! He has violently ripped a hole in the spiritual atmosphere and come into our world… His Word has become flesh and dwelt among us. As unsettling and unnatural as it was for a virgin to conceive and as foolish and unacceptable as it was for the world to embrace; God was rending the heavens and making Himself known to the nations. Why? Because His very Name is life, peace and salvation!

Let me repeat: His Name is Life, Peace and Salvation!

This “calling out” means several things. First, it implies that God will call out to us. He will make His name known to us, to call us to accountability. He knows us by name and He desires that we know Him… that we know His voice and His Presence. That we recognize love when it is demonstrated by a cross. It also implies a calling out to our enemy… His adversary! That’s right, can you picture this? Not only is God rending the heavens and calling out to us with words of life, He is also calling out to our enemy; the accuser, who accuses us day and night. What’s He saying… “It is Finished!” The day of vengence has now come…

  • I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:19-21)

God is once more rending the heavens and coming down to us, by releasing His Word. Will we hear Him? He is speaking concerning our breakthroughs, as well as exposing the strongholds that are blocking His advancement in the Earth. He is speaking new strategies and equipping His people with power to transform the culture one person at a time. Shaking is not a new thing, its a God thing… God is revealing His purposes in the Earth and exposing the enemy at the same time. Our responsibility is to walk in God’s Promises and trust in His Fathering Heart.

Understand His Intentions:

Position yourself to hear the Voice of Your Redeemer! Remove the old garments for the Bride Groom stands ready. Cast aside the influence of Babylon (the world system) and Mammon. Shake yourself free from discouragement that latches onto your mind. Renewal and refreshment are awaiting the Bride as she sees with the eyes of faith and love. This Bride Groom comes with fire in His eyes, declaring His intentions. The Lord is extending peace like a river and the wealth of the nations like flowing streams (Isa 66:12). He comes anouncing His intent… “I have come for My Bride!”

The Good News:

There is a good word in these times of shaking. “Though sorrow may last for the night, joy comes in the morning” (Ps 30:5). God is not finished and He has no intention of holding back… for in rending the heavens He is making His Name known among the nations. The mountains will shake, but those who have their hearts set on their Beloved… they will welcome the sound of His footsteps.

“And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)

“Christ” Means Anointed!

“Christ” – is not Jesus’ last name! That word, “Christ” is a significant title that means “Anointed”. It points to more than just a person named Jesus… He was the “Anointed One”. Jesus carried something with Him everywhere He went… the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Lk 4:18)(Acts 10:38). By calling His followers “Christians”; all the world should see that we too, are “little anointed ones”… and that we carry something significant everywhere we go.

Carrying the Anointing:

There were some radical faith words that Jesus spoke that shaped how His followers perceived what they carried. Christ would not be welcomed in many Christian circles today, because He was so dependent upon the anointing of God. He would have been criticized as an extreme faith preacher. But His words are nevertheless the words from the Father and 100% true for all time. Just listen to a few powerful declarations:

  • “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mk 11:23-24).
  • “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My Name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well” (Mk 16:15-18).
  • “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My Name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My Name, and I will do it” (Jn 14:12-14).

These are just some of the faith words that Jesus spoke in the New Testament. Are these words reliable? Do they make any difference in your life? Could they represent – truth? Can you believe Him… and believe His words?

…because it will make all the difference in how you carry the anointing!

We are called to carry His anointing everywhere we go (2 Cor 1:21)! It is the Holy Spirit’s power poured out (Acts 1:8) and kept fresh (Acts 4:29-31) that breaks yokes (Isa 10:27) and destroys the works of the devil (1 Jn 3:8). Our lives must be lived with passion and power! Walking uprightly before God means more than just observing all that Jesus taught and left us as an example. We are anointed to carry something that makes an impact on the world around us. This requires power from heaven!

The Anointing is Power… to Serve!

The anointing requires a lifestyle of reaching forward for more of Christ’s power. Its not just information; but spiritual knowledge and faith, that shapes the way we think and act toward the issues we face in life. God still does miracles with simple people like fishermen and housewives. Those who make the decision to trust God’s power rather than become desperate, are people He demonstrates His power through. We are not working out our religious duty, but carrying the same substance that rested upon Jesus, so we can approach problems the same way He approached them.

It Is Written

Loose the Heavens

“And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven”  (Matthew 16:19a)

This morning I spoke to the leaders about “keys”... keys to unlocking gates, offer access and loose the heavens!

Once God opens the heavens, there is wonderful Kingdom influence. There will be “arguments” that Satan has set up to keep you from moving forward. One example is forgiveness. Forgiving someone opens up many doors, its a key to the Kingdom of Heaven! But there will be arguments in your mind… “why should I forgive? That person does not deserve forgiveness?” So once you go through a door God has opened, be very aware of the arguments, the enemy will set up. Your freedom is just beyond the threshold where Christ has made a way for you to break into new territory.

A Season in Kenya where the heavens were loosed!

There had been awesome times of worship in the morning where I could “see” the heavens open… the veil was thin and our hearts abiding in the glory of God. So many had been to the altar weeping and receiving healing for their heart. And I was calling the pastors and leadership forward to share testimonies of the great things God was doing. I still remember one African pastor’s testimony as to what he could “see” in the spiritual realm. He got up and said that he saw “heaven shaking things all over the earth”.

“Therefore since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.  For our God is a consuming fire.”   (Hebrews 12:28)

One pastor calls me “the man who brings rain”- wafula – in Swahili.  This is because the day I arrived in Kenya it began to rain.  The interesting thing is that it only rains during the morning, and afternoon… and stops for the evening crusades. God is so good, when the heavens are open. As soon as everyone is packed up and leaving, the rain comes again!!  Strange things happen when you hold the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven in your hands. Thank you Lord for the “former and the latter rain”.

Breakthrough Comes:

I recall an evening meeting that brought in another 400 people, so there were about 1000 men, women and children crowded around the small platform… another 800 along the shops and toward the back of the meeting place (the African village courtyard). There was so much mud due to all the rain!! I spoke of God’s desire to set them completely free… that freedom was the reward of our surrendered lives in Christ! This same Jesus, who brought freedom to the oppressed came to break off chains and any bondage of the enemy. It was the story of Paul and Silas… angels opening the door of their prison cell… and how praise gets God’s ear every time. Breakthrough came like a rushing river. Praise broke out and many experienced the touch of heaven as the Holy Spirit moved in their midst. Signs and wonders were easy and many found themselves healed and saved in those precious moments.

Freedom in an African Courtyard!

I remember calling up the musicians and telling them “it’s times to dance, and give God something to inhabit”. The children immediately began to dance and then dancing broke out everywhere. As we quieted everyone down and began call people forward to receive the joy that only Jesus can bring… at least 150 more people ran forward to receive Christ. After that they all began to dance once more!!

Freedom is the sight – when heaven is loosed!
