At His Footstool

Ominous Sunset

Let the Heavens Open Wide

Psalm 110 is the most frequently quoted Old Testament passage in the New Testament. In this Psalm we get a picture of God as the Authoritative Father (Jehovah) speaking to His Son Jesus with crisp prophetic resolve…

“Come have a seat My Son, while the plans We worked out together before the creation of the world, reach their fulfillment”.

You might ask… why, out of all the ancient promises, did the first disciples turn to this text time and time again? The answer comes out of the fact that this Scripture gave them their purpose. This one text spoke more clearly than any other about how they understood themselves. They saw God at work in them… His Church – “Zion”. They embraced their assignment as God’s “rod of strength”; sent with a task and an anointing of power… “till I make Your (Jesus’) enemies Your footstool”.

Psalm 110 pinpoints the single greatest reality unfolding around us today…

the Kingdom of Heaven is forcefully advancing and men of violence are laying hold of its treasure (Mt 11:12).

Its drama helps us interpret both the front page of our newspapers as well as the frontlines of our battle. It reinforces the idea that people and events everywhere are being woven into the Kingdom plans for planet Earth… whether they know it or not. No matter how far from the center of God’s heart we may seem to be, Christ’s influence has its grip on every human domain. History is not moving in a vacuum; because God has a purpose in these last days to release an army of Saints to call out in the streets.

At “His footstool” we can watch history pursuing one increasing priority; not to have more church buildings or religious meetings… but to see God’s Son “rule in the midst of His enemies!” The enemies of Christ will fall, they will become the footstool beneath His feet and life upon this planet will change.

The Apostle John wrote, “…the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev 11:15).

Real Witness

“But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin. Hear this, you leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right; who build Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with wickedness.” (Micah 3:8-10)

Your real Christian witness flows from somewhere deeper than your voice. The Prophet Micah attributed the power of his ministry to the Spirit of the Lord. Our power comes from the same source! Out of the belly of a man; filled with the Holy Spirit, rises a testimony of truth and power (Jn. 7:37-39).

You are more than your story – You are His-story!

We cannot stand on our own righteousness… it is Christ in us that speaks of better things than what people see or hear. Indeed, were we to find ourselves reliant upon our strength, our wisdom or our charm, we would find no hope against the onslaught of this world’s trouble. But we are not at all in the clutches of impending doom… for we are not our own. We live as Christ’s Ambassadors (2 Cor 5:20). We have been purchased by a blood as pure and holy as the whitest snow (Eph 1:7). We have been offered freedom’s highest position (Eph. 2:6). And we have a voice within ourselves that comes streaming forth like a rushing waterfall (Phil. 4:13). Christ has become our strength, our wisdom and our witness, because He is our peace… our focus and our joy. He is our Righteousness!

The Mystery: Its “Christ in you, the hope of Glory” (Col. 1:27)

Jesus told His followers they would receive power to witness about Him when the Holy Spirit came on them (Acts. 1:8). You can’t witness effectively by relying on your own strength, because fear will keep you from speaking out for God. You can’t witness effectively by choosing the best sermons or knowing the right words to say. You are not smart enough to outwit the devil. You cannot witness effectively by creating the best atmosphere or offering the most attractive invitation. Only by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit can you live and witness for Him! But with that power comes the promise that signs and wonders will follow those who believe (Mk. 16:17).

“Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.” (Acts 8:6-8)

This is the witness we have in Christ: “That if God be for us, who can stand against us?” (Rom. 8:31)

The Garment of Praise

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;  To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He might be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:1-3)

The answer against a “spirit of heaviness” is to put on the ”garment of praise.”

Satan hates praise:

Praise exalts Jesus no matter what the circumstances may look like. It engages our trust in God and activates our faith like nothing else can do. You see, praise introduces light and supernatural life into our circumstances. It is the ultimate release of spiritual freedom. Just listen to the following verses and let something click inside.

(2 Cor 3:17) “The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

(Gal 5:1) ” Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

(Jn 8:36) ” Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Praise is Agreement with God!

Praising the Lord and agreement with the truth of God’s Word, renews the mind and lifts the spirit of heaviness off your shoulders. Notice the Prophet Isaiah says that your life is designed to reflect your calling as “trees of righteousness”. Its your destiny to become the “planting of the Lord”. As you praise Him daily, you will release the stature of Christ within you… “that He may be glorified”, seen and celebrated as your Deliverer! Nothing so clearly displays the power of God like our freedom in the spirit.

The Effect of a Spirit of Heaviness:

It darkens our countenance. Our hearts are down cast. This spirit brings a “heaviness” over us and dims our vision, robs our hope and crushes our sense of purpose. There are testimonies I’ve heard from people who say “when this spirit comes it even makes the room feel darker”. It brings a heavy and oppressive atmosphere that restricts and quenches our perception. It may come like a cloud hanging over you or your location, but the most difficult part to deal with is that it causes isolation. The devil’s goal is to remove you from the atmosphere of love and approval. Think about it, if Satan can get you isolated, then he can break your spirit and remove your source of inspiration and hope.

Recognize it:

This is the first step. You are a Child of God! This is not God’s will for you!  “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31) Don’t believe the lies… Praise God instead! Accept no criticism and carry no extra baggage. You must learn the art of selective hearing, so that you choose the things you ignore and the things that come from the Throne of Heaven. We destroy arguments and pull down strongholds, so that every thought is made captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor 10:5). That means I am actively discerning where my thoughts are coming from and believe me… I can rule over them with praise!

Put on the Garment of Praise!

This literally means to be “wrapped up in praise”. God has given it to be worn and provide insulation. So put it on like a jacket every single day. Take a few moments each morning and every time there is a battle raging, to put it on like armor on a soldier. You will watch your enemy run for cover with his tail between his legs… like a whipped puppy. That’s right, praise is your most effective tool in magnifying God and shrinking the influence of the devil. Get loud, get aggressive and set your heart on spiritual freedom!

It is the anointing that breaks the yoke! (Isa 10:27)

Govern Your Territory!

The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! (Ps. 110:1-2)

God is calling every Believer to Govern their Spiritual Territory!

In Psalm 110:2 we read the word “rule”… or Rada in the Hebrew. It speaks to us of extending the authority of our King – Jesus, who destroyed the oppressive works of the devil. He conquered death and the grave triumphantly through the Cross of Calvary. His resurrection signified the crushing of the headship of Satan once and for all… life over death and righteousness over sin. Not only was it a completed work that accomplished God’s purpose, but it serves as the springboard of delegated authority offered to all who believe, to advance the victory won 2000 years ago! You and I can rule in the midst of our enemies… by recognizing that any challenge, aimed to hinder love or distract us from Kingdom purpose; is an enemy of Christ. You were anointed for this very purpose!

How?

Governing your spiritual territory is accomplished by prayer, praise, perseverance and practicing His Presence… leaning into the Holy Spirit for vision and effective strategies. It was the compelling stewardship once laid out in the Garden of Eden… (Gen. 1:28) “fill and subdue”; but it was lost because of silence, passivity and sin. Yet the command is just as real as from the moment it was first delivered to the Adamites… “take dominion of the Garden.”

The Apostle Paul gives us some definition of what governing your territory looks like from his own experience. “We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits (*metron, Grk.) of the sphere (*kanon, Grk.) which God appointed us — a sphere which especially includes you. For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.” (2 Cor 10:13-15)

Definitions of these 2 Greek words:

  • ‘Metron’ – a portioned-off measure, a determined extent, a measure or limit
  • ‘Kanon’ – one’s sphere of activity; a definitely bounded or fixed space within the limits of which one’s authority or influence is confined; a province or region assigned to a person

3 Key Truths: 1) Every believer has a ministry, 2) an assignment entrusted to them 3) by the Holy Spirit

  1. Your metron is a territory that God has measured out and given you a sense of responsibility over.
  2. Your metron is your ministry assignment and your sphere of spiritual influence… your delegated authority.
  3. Your metron is a specific location where you have a physical presence and spiritual stewardship… a physical place, position, or a group of people.

The Goal: Advance the Victory that Jesus won for Every Believer!

The Lord measures out to you a specific territory in which you are called to move in power and advance the Kingdom of God! It is up to you to govern you spiritual territory! (2 Cor. 10:3-6) It may feel like a battle, may cost you your reputation or cause you to make significant changes in your daily routine. But it is your assignment, and as a Kingdom Ambassador you represent heaven; and everywhere you go is to become an Embassy of Kingdom influence! Your goal is to govern… to rule in such a way whereby God receives all the Glory and His King is established upon the Throne of every heart within the reach of your dominion!

“I have already gone before you,” says the Lord with a shout. “Rada! Rule in the Midst of My Enemies!”

The High Ground

When we make the decision to follow Christ and put our faith in His power to lead us; we are immediately struck by the reality, that other things will challenge us for the position of first place or the “high ground”. As Spirit anointed Children of God, we must allow the Holy Spirit to train us in holding the ground He has given us to possess. We are designed to follow dominion principles over the things that God has given… its our inheritance in Christ and spiritual stewardship. It was one of the key principles of the Garden of Eden as God expected man to “have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle and over all the earth”  (Gen. 1:26-28).

First Place is the Highest Place!

Devotion and discipline are huge factors in our ability to maintain our dominion in high places. The two primary goals of honoring God with our lives and serving Him with our gifts; begin to come into focus when we do the first things well. Jesus made the promise to us that if we would seek first the Kingdom of God; all the important things we value most, would come into priority in our lives. It would come out of… and after, the obedient lifestyle (Mt 6:33). In other words, when you and I hold on to the high places a strategic and spiritual advantage is given to our stewardship in other arenas of life.

Living by Revelation:

Doing first things well opens our capacity to see and hear the secrets of heaven. Its what the Apostle Paul was getting at when he prayed that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ would give to us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. He was determined to get the eyes of our understanding enlightened, “to know the hope of His calling”, the “riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints” and the “exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe” (Eph. 1:17-19). The mysteries of the Kingdom of God are unfolding realities that are only discovered, revealed and lived out by active believing… seeking!

Seeking Transforms and Aligns our Desires with His Will!

Seeking after God is a must in order for us to hold on to the high ground. It is a sure thing that our commitment to Christ will be tested, but we can trust our Heavenly Father to deliver on the Promises of His Word. Seeking first the Kingdom of God actually releases the Holy Spirit’s Presence in our lives so that discernment and conviction come to the surface. These are the Spiritual Man’s greatest resources in walking in the dominion of Christ. As we process life on spiritual levels; our hearts are aligned and behaviors are adjusted and affirmed by a sense of the peace of God. The Peace of God rules our hearts.

Testimonies Encourage and Strengthen our Resolve!

Testimonies help us hold on to the high ground! We need not be anxious about our future, because God is with us! He has proven Himself in times of trials and our trust is set by our knowledge of His loving care for us. We can rejoice and be thankful through all things. There is an abiding peace which passes understanding guarding our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus and we are unmoved by storms or struggles (Phil 4:4-7). Nothing can stand against us!

Set Your Mind & Heart:

So keep holding on to the high ground and make it your aim to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Your confidence will arise; even in the midst of the threats of the enemy or the confusion of the world. And you will not be ashamed! Live with the awareness that God will release wisdom and revelation for breakthrough in your life. Christ is in you, giving you power and dominion over all the things that concern you. Breakthrough happens right before your eyes, so that in your believing you are able to watch the Kingdom of God advancing in the Earth. You are the Child of the King!

Hear the Prophetic Command:
“Rada! Rule in the midst of your enemies!”

“The LORD (Jehovah/Father) said to my Lord (Jesus/The Son) sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool. The LORD (Jehovah/Father) shall send the rod (sceptor) of Your strength out of Zion (the Church)… Rule (Rada) in the midst of Your enemies!” (Ps. 110:1-2)
